Jane McNeely-Sowell passed away on May 24, 2024, after a long and courageous battle with cancer. She was 69 years old. Jane will be remembered for her strong faith and integrity, for her love of family, and as a devoted community servant.
Born to the late Robert Ney and Geneva King McNeely, Jane was preceded in death by her brother Robert McNeely Jr. She is survived by her husband Jack Sowell, nephew Brad McNeely (Emily), nephew Michael McNeely, brother James McNeely (Kathy), nephew Jonathan McNeely, niece Gabby Nations (Jason), great-nephew Jameson Nations, sister-in-law Sarah Albertin (Mark), and sister-in-law Linda Sowell (Ed). Extended family; Joni Nash Case, Andrew Nash (Leah), Maggie Hill (Alan), Russell Nash, and Zane Nash.
A passionate educator, Jane received a Bachelor’s degree in Education from UNC-C, a Master’s degree for Exceptional Children from ECU, and later a second Master’s degree in Curriculum and Administration. She eagerly took advantage of opportunities to study at both Yale and Columbia Universities. Jane was recognized as a Star Educator for Union County Public Schools, where she worked as a classroom teacher, a teacher for the Academically Gifted, served as a Curriculum Coordinator, and retired as the Director of Federal Funding. An advocate for the underserved, Jane had a tremendous impact on the lives of students, parents, and staff members at both the local and county levels.
A lifelong Presbyterian, Jane was the organist at Waxhaw Presbyterian Church for over 30 years where she also taught Bible studies, worked with Bible school and the Weekday Ministry, After moving to Lancaster, she transferred her membership to First Presbyterian where she joined the bell choir, and served as an Elder on the Session. A true civic leader, Jane was active in many organizations. She served on the Board of the Waxhaw Historical Festival and Drama Association, was a member of the Board of the Directors for the Museum of the Waxhaws and was Musical Director for the outdoor drama “Listen and Remember”. Jane was the Chairman of the ABC Board for the Town of Waxhaw, and was a founding member of the Board of Directors for the Storefront Theatre. President of the Waxhaw Woman’s Club from 2015 – 2017, she remained an active member in various leadership capacities until her death. Jane believed in giving back to the community and viewed public service as an opportunity and a privilege.
A woman of many talents, Jane had a wicked sense of humor, was a wonderful storyteller, and an amazing cook. She loved decorating for the holidays and was truly in her element entertaining family and friends. When there was a need, she was the first to respond with a home cooked meal. A self-proclaimed Hippie, Jane loved a great tune, a little tie dye and an afternoon ride with the top down and the wind on her face.
A Celebration of Life for Jane McNeely-Sowell will be held on June 8, 2024 at 11:00 am at First Presbyterian Lancaster located at 700 North Main Street, Lancaster, SC 29720 with a reception immediately following.
