This isn’t just a building—it’s part of Waxhaw’s story. Since 1894 the Belk Building (currently the home of the Waxhaw Woman’s Club) has been standing watch over East South Main Street, a symbol of our town’s identity and small-town heritage. For generations, it has contributed to the character and charm that make Waxhaw so special. Losing it would mean losing a piece of what defines our community.
After more than 132 years the Belk Building is in need of immediate structural repairs – this is not about cosmetic improvements – this is about saving the building itself. Existing foundation issues and failing floors are threatening its structural integrity. Acting now is necessary and far more cost-effective than waiting until the damage worsens. Funds raised will go directly toward stabilizing the foundation, replacing unsafe and damaged flooring, and preserving the structure for future use.
For many of us, this place holds personal meaning. Whether it was shopping, gathering, or simply passing by downtown, the Belk building is tied to shared memories. We invite you to reflect on your own connection to it, and then become part of its future.
Once the building is fully restored it will continue to be a vibrant cornerstone of downtown Waxhaw – housing local business, serving as a community gathering space, and a venue for events and cultural activities. Our focus encompasses both preservation and revitalization.
Saving this building also has real economic impact. Preserving historic landmarks helps boost property values, increase tourism and foot traffic, and support the growth of small businesses. This effort is an investment in Waxhaw’s future economy.
Our goal is to raise funds enough to complete the foundation stabilization and flooring replacement. Each milestone brings us closer to preserving this historic structure for generations to come.
We can’t do this without you. This project belongs to all of us. Every contribution — large or small — moves us closer to saving this important landmark. Local businesses, families, and organizations all have an opportunity to be part of this effort and be recognized for their support.
Please consider making a contribution today to help save a piece of Waxhaw’s history. Donations can be made easily via check, cash, or online using the form below. Years from now, people may walk through downtown Waxhaw and never know how close we came to losing this building — but we didn’t, all because this community stepped up and saved it.
With gratitude,
Waxhaw Woman’s Club
