Join in the fun on August 17th as we help support local kids as they go back to school!
Ask any teacher at any grade level and they will tell you that the first days of school set the tone for the entire year. A good start to the school year can make a world of difference for students, and the 4th annual Back to School Bash wants to help make those first days a rousing success for all students.
The event will take place on Saturday, August 17th from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. at Waxhaw Elementary School. Registration, where students will be asked their name, grade, and school, is at 10 a.m. and is required. Students will receive a colored wristband identifying their school. This ensures that they receive a backpack the contents of which match the supplies list published by the school they will attend. This event, which begins at 11 a.m., is for students who will be attending Waxhaw Elementary, Western Union Elementary, Parkwood Middle School, Parkwood High School, and South Providence this coming fall.
Some of the highlights of the 2019 Back to School Bash include
- A backpack containing school supplies for each student in attendance
- A pair of shoes and a pair of socks for each student
- Boxed Lunches – hot dogs, chicken fingers, baked beans, cole slaw, chips and cold beverages
- Music – provided by Weddington United Methodist and a local DJ
- Eye screenings
- Hearing tests
- Boxed grocery giveaways
- Raffles with fabulous prizes! (You must be present to win.)
This wonderful program was started 4 years ago as a community cookout, the idea of which was “cooked up” by Denise Truesdale and Sharon Miller. The goal was then, and continues to be, to support local students as they begin a new school year. Denise and Sharon take the lead for this event, but like any other community initiative, success requires a lot of support. Back to School Bash supporters include Waxhaw United Methodist Church, Waxhaw Baptist Church, Faith Community Church, Wesley Chapel AME Zion Church, Five Stones Ministry, Weddington United Methodist Church, David Upchurch Real Estate, Waxhaw Police Department, the Waxhaw Woman’s Club, Soul 2 Soul Ministry, Costco, YMCA, Common Heart Ministry, and individuals from the Waxhaw community.
While Denise and Sharon have put together a great support network, much is still needed. Denise would like to see this event expanded to include providing uniforms (both new and gently used) to those students who are required to wear them, and of course to be able to help a greater number of students. This is a grassroots project, begun by people at the community level who understand the need and have a desire to help fill that need.
Would you like to get involved? School supplies are needed to fill backpacks. Here are lists of supply items from Waxhaw Elementary, Western Union Elementary, Parkwood Middle, Parkwood High, and South Providence. Donations can be dropped off at the Waxhaw Police Department. The deadline for item donations is Saturday, July 20th.
If you don’t have time to shop, a cash donation will be gratefully accepted, and the shopping will be done for you. Monetary donations are being collected by the Waxhaw Police Department, and checks can be made payable to the Waxhaw Police Department. 100% of your donation will be forwarded onto the Back to School Bash event coordinators.
Volunteers are also needed to work during the event in the following areas:
- Grocery distribution table
- Registration desk
- Book bag distribution
- Assisting with games
- Assisting with eye screening, hearing tests, and fingerprinting
- Packing lunch boxes
If you would like to volunteer, please contact Candace via email at email@example.com.
